A quiet autumn walk

Person holding yellow gingko leaf in the autumn

Tired of staying indoors, washing the same dishes, sweeping the floors and rearranging shoes, I decided to take a walk.

Normally I walk around the neighborhood — past the swings, the slides, the baseball diamond, the soccer fields and back again.

Today, needing a change from my ‘usual’, I took a different route. I drove to our local sports centre and decided to explore some of the walking paths there.

It was a beautiful fall day. The sports centre sits on the edge of some undeveloped land, so goldenrod, some spiky purple flowers, and little white daisies were blooming in profusion. The combination of gold and purple added to the rainbow of oranges and reds in the trees and hills nearby.

I watched little snails slime their way across my path, leaving shiny trails behind them. They were on some kind of mysterious business this morning.

Just as I approached the parking lot, I saw a collection of small yellow fan-shaped leaves on the grass nearby. “I wonder if those are gingko leaves”, I mused to myself. (Turned out they were.) They hailed from a little gingko tree not too far away.

The wind was fresh, not too cold, blowing some viruses away, I wanted to think.

I arrived home, hopeful, refreshed, carrying my little gingko leaf.
